A while ago, right before this picture was taken in 2008, I overheard someone mention that Los Angeles had a river… "The Los Angeles River" to be exact.

Me being the nature lover I am, so fond of natural bodies of water and always trying to photograph moving water, I was very interested.
"Wow", I thought. "How come I never heard of this before? I thought LA was just a city. I didn't know it had a river!"
I found a location online to access the river and drove there immediately. There was a sign just before the "river bank" that read "Los Angeles River" with a picture of one of my favorite birds on it: an Egret.

In my excitement, I rushed down the steep bank and immediately set up my tripod and camera. I was enthralled by the beauty of this oasis. How lucky I was to have set up near a lush patch of gorgeous green vegetation, thriving in this nurturing environment. (seen in the bottom right of the photo)
The scene was captivating.. The sound of rushing water, the color: a beautiful brackish brown. The sweet smell of carbon dioxide and waste (no doubt from the many river dwellers) permeating the atmosphere.
Just behind me, there were 3 people in old worn-out sleeping bags up on a dry part of the bank. "How cool.. They're camping here... They must be veteran campers, cause they got good sites right by the river." I said to myself.
I looked into the river for fish and other aquatic wildlife, like I've seen in rivers elsewhere and on nature programs… I was pleasantly surprised to find many creatures floating down the current and I believe they are all new species. Many of them seem to have natural mimicking abilities and have taken the forms of plastic bags, coat hangers, rusted shopping carts, soggy cereal boxes and the like. "They must all be predatory species" I thought to myself, as they floated by in different forms, sometimes getting caught on one another, but staying still nonetheless to conserve as much energy as possible while letting the current transport them where they needed to go… "God must be getting really creative" I thought.

Just then, I realized that this beautiful river had been decorated across the other side with murals and paintings above the riverbank, undoubtedly masterminded by some like-minded nature loving artists to enhance the experience of this place and pay homage to mother nature's pungent brown current.
And look, up above in the distance: A large building that seems to be creating cirrus clouds and sending them off into the sky… "A cloud factory!" Such a wonderful idea, especially on an overcast day like this.

Thank you, Los Angeles for preserving such a sacred place. LA River, long may you run.
